Informations or Booking
The Azienda Agricola Polveraia is located in the heart of the Tuscany countryside, just 2 km (1,22 miles) from the walls of the medieval town of San Gimignano, surrounded by some of the best vineyards in the world, with olive groves up the hill and beautiful woodland below. The accomodation is on the ground floor of Daniela and Maurizio ancestors’ home: a guesthouse with three double bedrooms, each with independent entrance, fridge, central heating, digital tv and en-suite bathroom. There’s also a fully fitted kitchen and a living area with wide-screen tv.
The Azienda Agricola Polveraia is a family-run working farm, certified ORGANIC since 2002, whose core business are those most typical of the traditional Tuscan agricultural produce: wine, oil and grain.
The farm also produces, mainly for its own consumption, small quantities of other traditional produce, such as saffron, vin santo, seasonal fruit and vegetables; poultry, horses and pigs are also reared at the farm.
The produce
WINE The basis for the Chianti dei Colli Senesi is, as is traditional for most great Tuscan wines, the grape variety Sangiovese. But the vineyards at Polveraia are not only home to the classic Tuscan varieties such as Canaiolo, Colorino, Prugnolo and Ciliegiolo, but to almost forgotten, old indigenous varieties – some a century-old – that make the wine absolutely unique. The IGT Brusco white wine is produced mainly with Vernaccia grapes D.O.C.G. di San Gimignano with small quantities of Malvasia and Trebbiano.
OIL The farm produces the IGP Toscano Podere Riposo, an extravergin olive oil from about 1500 trees, of wich 35% variety Frantoio, 35% Moraiolo and 30% Leccino. The 2005/2006 Polveraia production has been awarded the prestigious “cinque gocce” rating for excellence by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier dell’Olio. The “five drops” rating is the highest award presented by the AISO to only 44 olive oil producers out of about 500 applicants throughout Italy.
DIRECTIONS The easiest way to reach San Gimignano is to take the motorway Firenze-Siena and exit at Poggibonsi Nord. Once you get to San Gimignano, take the road to Volterra; after 700 m. (less than half a mile) turn left towards Montauto; after 1500 m. (about a mile) leave the road and turn left onto a dirt track. On the left handside you’ll see some barrels: just before you reach them, turn left onto the path that leads to Polveraia.
