The agricultural and turistic centre La Sassetta is situated in the high Maremma area of Tuscany in the countryside around Bibbona in the province of Livorno. It sits on the hillside of the Etruscan riviera at 80 metres above sea level and is only 6 km from the coast. It covers a total surface area of 73,000 sq.metres and is a family concern dedicated to the cultivation of vines, olives and fruits since 1990. All the cultivation is strictly biological and regularly controlled and certified by the Consortium for the Control of Biological Products. The products can be bought on the farm. Given the perfect location of the farm at only 8 km from the beaches of Marina di Bibbona, 2 km from Magona (a natural biogenetic reserve), just a few km from Bolgheri and other characteristic villages that are examples of Etruscan, Roman and Mediaeval civilisation and at the most only one hour by road from the noted cities of art such as Volterra, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena and Florence., in 1999 the owners decided to set up a small agrituristic centre as a destination for nature, beach and cultural holidays. The Agrituristic centre is situated in the centre of the farm property, surrounded by the perfumes and sounds of the typically mediterranean vegetation and immersed in the green of the vines and olive trees with a panoramic view stretching from the green hills of the Magona countryside right to the sea and the islands of the archipelago. The agrituristic centre offers its guests hospitality in independent units. The main house is of recent construction and is built of local stone reflecting the ancient Tuscan tecniques and art of building. The centre can be reached via a 200m long private road and is completely fenced in with an electronically controlled gate. It offers a spacious garden, covered parking area and the possibility to have barbecues and is the ideal place for those who enjoy a holiday by the sea or visiting ancient villages, cities of art or simply seek to relax surrounded by the nature of the Tuscan countryside. The apartments: are made up of a living room with a kitchen area, double bedroom, single or twin bedroom, bathroom with shower and an outside shady area complete with table and benches. All the apartments are completely independent of each other with individual heating facilities. They are furnished with original 1800’s Tuscan style furniture which has been carefully renovated, they come complete with satellite TV and all the necessary furnishings to guarantee a comfortable stay.
Olive oil: our extra virgin olive oil comes from biological cultivation and is extracted from various types of olives such as Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo e Pendolino which make up the traditional Tuscan mix. This, in simbiosis with the micro-climate and the careful cultivation techniques practised by the owners, guarantees an extremely high quality product. Our holding complies with the regulations of the Consortium for Tuscan Oil of which it is a member thanks to the recognition of oil from a Protected Geografic Region IGP TOSCANO. Grapes: our wine grapes are the result of biological cultivation in an area of ideal soil conditions made up of three hectares of vines. The black grapes deriving from the best clones of the Cabernet-Sauvignon and Sangiovese varieties and the white grapes deriving from the Vermentino variety are certainly the basis for obtaining high quality wines. Bibbona may be defined as the North door of the Tuscany, with an old origin. It is a typical Middle Ages village on the hills of the countryside of Livorno and keeps its original old map: it consists of a sequence of circles, joined by narrow lanes and stairways. Located at 98 mt on the sea level and at 3 km far from it, Bibbona is ideal for different types of natural excursions: trekking, mountain-bike, rides and ecological walking through the national park “Macchia della Magona” or through “Padule di Bolgheri”, more to south. Many historical, cultural and religious architectures are noteworthy. Among these, we remind the church “S. Maria della Pietà”, built at the end of ’400 and considered as an example of the Renaissance architecture, very important for all Tuscany; moreover we can find the churches “Sant’Ilario” and “San Giuseppe”. We also remind the Fortress of Bibbona, built in 1790 to defence the coast as far as Castagneto. The Castle of Bibbona, one of the most important castles in all over the Maremma area, is defended by walls with towers and a deep moat. Other architectonic jewels are the palace “Rossi Ciampolini Gardini”, built at the and of ‘700, and the tower of Bibbona, built at the and of ‘500, that has a square map and has been restored many times. Nature lovers, besides artistic and historical works, can visit the national park “Macchia della Magona”: a green sea stretched for more than 1600 hectares. One of the most famous resorts of the Etruscan Coast is Marina di Bibbona, which spread out around the Fortress, built over the sea in order to defend the region from the pirate raids. Marina di Bibbona is a nice and popular seaside resort with a great pine wood and Medici Fortress, which gives the name to the village. Its modern and equipped beaches are frequented by international people, who love relaxation, but also sport and fun. In Marina di Bibbona you can find a clear sea and a thick pine wood along the beach, modelled by the characteristic dunes and “tomboli” of the Mediterranean vegetation. Here it is possible to cycle, to ride and to have long walks in every season of the year.
