Immersed in the splendid hillsides of Lucca, in Boveglio – the town of Villa Basilica – rises the “Casa Sotto La Torre” (“House at the Foot the Tower”) a 120 m2 apartment with 3 double bedrooms (6 six sleeping places), 2 bathrooms, fireplace, private garden equipped for lunches and dinners, solarium and small playground for children.
The home has recently been renovated, maintaining in tact the Tuscan construction characteristics of the past, and further is decorated with the restored original furnishings. At Casa Sotto La Torre you can pass enjoyable, tranquil moments in close contact with the surrounding nature, or, thanks its favourable position, you can reach many important and pleasant to visit tourist sites.
Villa Basilica, noted during Medieval times for its armament workshops (it was famous for making the swords that it supplied to the entire peninsula), is today among one of Lucca’s most industrialized towns, thanks to its numerous paper mills present in its territory, which in the past was covered by olive groves and chestnut woods. Today agriculture is minimal and includes only that of harvesting olives and the consequent production of oil, though of an excellent quality. Underwood products are important in this territory: sweet and juicy berries and delicious mushrooms are picked here. Villa Basilica is also a highly visited summer vacation centre. Not to be missed is the city of Lucca – reachable by car in around 30 minutes – with its noted monuments, innumerable churches, the famous, still-in-tact historic city walls, and the historic villas of the Piana di Lucca.
The Garfagnana region, the green heart of Tuscany, can be reached by car following a unique itinerary of uncontaminated nature, dotted with antique villages. Just 40 minutes by car, an interesting place to visit is the Grotte del Vento, in the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Apuane (Natural Park of the Apuan Alps), with three different guided itineraries which will accompany you on discovery of an underground world made up of colorful vignettes of living and brilliant stalagmites and stalactites. Also interesting to see is the nearby Eremo di Calomini, which seems to be “relaxing” along the rocky walls. Collodi and the famous Parco di Pinocchio are just 10 minutes by car, and, if you have kids along, they would enjoy visiting the magnificent Villa Garzoni with its beautiful baroque gardens from the 1600s - among Europe’s most famous. Bagni di Lucca was inhabited in the bronze age, then, thanks to its thermal baths, by the Etruscans and the Romans. Bagni Caldi (translated “Hot Baths”), was actually a famous antique village, first used by the Romans then by famous writers and poets who here found inspiration for their compositions (Lord Byron, Eugenio Montale, Henry James have all stayed here). There are 2 natural steam caves here: "Grotta Grande" and the smaller "Grotta Paolina", named in honor of Napoleon’s sister, in which the internal temperature varies based on the depth, therefore its temperature is higher at bust height and lower at the feet. The caves’ sodium-bicarbonate-calciums are considered effective for treating various rheumatic symptoms and stress. A popular legend says that under Bagni Caldi and nearby Ponte a Serraglio is a volcano, to which is due the thermal activity. It is reachable by car in little more than 10 minutes. For nature and trekking lovers, “Valeriana Trekking” is a natural journey in search of antique villages such as Svizzera Pesciatina, the so-called Dieci Castella or the Aramo, Vellano, Pontito, Stiappa, San Quirico, Sorana, Medicina, Fibbialla, Castelvecchio and Pietrabuona, connected by an itinerary immersed in uncontaminated pine and chestnut woods.
