Signa covers approximately 20 square km in an area between the rivers Ombrone, Bisenzio and Arno. It is the smallest town in the province of Florence, city located just a few kilometers to the east. The first major town was born in the roman era and developed in the Middle Ages as a river port on the Arno. The strategic trading position, on the only navigable stretch of the river up to Pisa, granted it a certain importance and growth also at artistic and cultural level noticeable especially in the churches and palaces of Signa. The area above town, where the castle stands, was built around 1000 and then enriched with city walls and gates in the '300. It's here that find place the most interesting religious architecture in town: the Church of Santa Maria in Castello, dating back to 978 but profoundly transformed over the centuries, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which houses the remains of the Blessed Giovanna patron of the town. Admirable are even the Church of San Lorenzo, which holds within it some Lombard tombs, and the Church of San Miniato. Nearby Signa are some villas built between the '400 and '500, among these are Villa Castelletti and Villa San Lorenzo. The first was a long time resident of the florentine family Cavalcanti and stayed there even Guido, the famous poet friend of Dante. Is due to this family the expansion o f the villa and the addition of the second floor. The second one is formed by two buildings erected in different periods and belonged to various nobles over time. Today it is run by a private company. In the past Signa was known for the art of weaving straw to make the headgear known as 'straw hats of Florence' but this activity ended in the early '900. Today the traditional crafts and manufacturing activities are concentrated in the clothing sector. To this is added cultural tourism also directed towards Florence.|SignaHolidays House a Signa
