Located on the east coast of the island, Giglio Porto is the first town you will come across landing with the ferry . It's also the first to be inhabited in roman times and there are still some ruins of that period. There you could find a small harbor in granite that penetrated into the sea for about 120 m and that solved to the needs of the intense maritime activity that took place there. Today the platform has been canceled in favor of the more modern port with commercial and tourist functions. Throughout history Giglio Porto was repeatedly abandoned and repopulated since living so close to the coast could be, in some periods, a real danger because of the frequent pirate raids. The town grew to become the current one only in the mid-eighteenth century. Initially it was a simple fishing village but today is a bustling tourist destination particularly stormed in the summer. On the main square, Piazza della Dogana, regarded as 'the living room of the island', open bars and restaurants open till late at night, narrow alleys and streets that lead to Campese and Castle, and a multitude of characteristic colorful houses. In Giglio Porto are also the island's main services as pharmacy, bank, post office, rental bikes, cars and boats and diving centers. From here you can then easily reach the beaches of Cannelle, Caldane and Arenella. At the harbor stands the Towe r of Saraceno, badly damaged by the pirates during an assoult. It fulfilled its function of warning and defense up to '800. Nearby it is also the Tower of Lazzeretto built by Cosimo I de' Medici in the second half of the '500 but completed only a century later, later there was implanted a lazzeretto which served to accommodate travelers from epidemic areas as preventive measure for 40 days.|"Giglio Porto"Hotel a Giglio Porto
