Located on the eastern side of the promontory of Argentario, Porto Ercole, placed among the 'most beautiful villages in Italy', it is a beautiful seaside town on the coast of the Maremma. The town is surrounded by a natural and unequaled panorama, perched along the side of the mountain toverlooking a stretch of clear water in which are moored yachts and small boats. The area was to be attended by the Etruscans and later became probably the site of a byzantine lighthouse. In the Middle Ages were built the first fortifications but was with the conquest of Siena in '400 that were built the walls of the city which includes the Bastion of Santa Barbara, the Tower of Water and the Tower dell'Avvoltore. About a century later once arrived, the Spaniards provided to increase the defense system of the Argentario restoring the ancient fortresses and building the Forte Filippo, the Forte Santa Catarina, the imposing Forte Stella and the Tower of Mulinaccio. On the square it is instead the Palace of the Governors or the headquarters of the Spanish captains at the service of the State of the Garrisons in the '700. Each of these old buildings, all visitable sometimes accompanied by a guide, make the atmosphere of Porto Ercole even more impressive and exciting. If in fact at the time of spanish rule the port reached its peak at commercial level, over the years it has turned into one beautiful marina destination for international tourism. The village is popular especially during spring and summer when the beaches and the rocky coves of the promontory are occupied by tourists. The restaurants in the old town offering local dishes based on fish are alike crowded in the warm months.|"Porto Ercole"Camping a Porto Ercole
