About 1.200 people live in the town of Rio nell'Elba permanently located on the low hills in the eastern part of the Island of Elba. The name Rio comes from the presence of an abundant stream that runs through the village and until the nineteenth century make functioning several water mills. It is one of the oldest villages in Elba originated already in the Bronze Age. Etruscans and Romans settled there to fully exploit the rich iron mines that were on its territory. The castle, now in ruins, dating back to the eleventh century and was built by the pisans who dominated the area until 1399. Rio later became part of the domains of the prince Appiano of Piombino and remained tied to them until 1801. After the Napoleonic period, the entire island was entrusted to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Among the oldest buildings include in particular the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, built in the time of the domain of Pisa still retains its medieval implant although it has been remodeled several times over the years, the Church of San Quirico in the locality of Grassera, even it of medieval origin but now reduced to a few ruins, and the Church of the Santissima Trinità, founded in the fifteenth century. Not far from the town, on the road linking Rio to the north coast, stands the Castle Volterraio. The building dates back to the eleventh century and is now reduced to a few ruins, but from its position dominates much of the island panorama. The town is popular, especially in the summer, with tourists headed to the equipped beaches of sand and gravel that are within its territory. Greatly developed is also the field of viticulture with the rows arranged in the hills.|"Rio nell'Elba"Residence a Rio Nell'elba
