The town center is located to the southwest of the Apuan Alps not far from the coast of the Ligurian Sea that bathes instead the tourist locality of Lido di Camaiore. The territory thus varies from high mountains to the vast sandy beaches. First inhabited by Etruscans, Ligurians and then by the Romans in the Middle Ages experienced a great development due to its proximity to the Via Francigena. In this period were erected the Abbey of San Pietro and the Church of Santo Stefano. Between the eleventh and the thirteenth centuries the richest members of the Lombards built several castles and fortresses perched on the surrounding hills and in part still visible: Gombitelli, Pedona, Fibbialla, Montecastrese, Orbicciano. Around 1225 Lucca, wanting to gain a port on the Mediterranean, set his eyes on the area of Camaiore occupying it by force. Later decided also to provide it with a wall height of about 9 m complete with 13 towers of which, however, remains only some parts significantly lowered. Camaiore is today a quiet town frequented especially during the summer from italian and foreign tourists attracted by the beauties of the Versilia. The town is also a great starting point, away from the traffic, from which visit the nearest art city like Lucca, Massa, Pisa, Livorno, Pistoia and the tourist towns of Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta and Viareggio. Several events and celebrations, especially religious theme, animate the center of the town during the year. Is good to remember the Corpus Christi procession in which the streets are decorated with handmade carpets of colored sawdust, the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, the Three-year of Jesus Death, the Palio dei Rioni and the Palio of the Assumption.|Camaiore
