Holidays in massa e cozzile in province of pistoia
The town of Massa and Cozzile is located a few miles from the center of Montecatini in Valdinievole. It consists of several villages scattered in a hilly area of about 16 sq km. The hamlet of Massa is one of the oldest in the valley, as witness the numerous coins and funerary urns found on its territory. Around the fifth and up to the third century BC developed there an important roman agricultural center. In the Middle Ages the town was fortified, today can still be seen the Porta ai Campi and Porta Fontana that opened in the walls. Cozzile instead arose in the Middle Ages but its history has always been linked to the events of Massa. It's along with this that starting from 1339 found itself located in the center of the struggles between Florence, Lucca and Pisa for the control of Valdinievole. At the time of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Massa became the seat of a podesteria aggregated to the nearby village of Buggiano. The present municipality is formed only in 1814 and now has about 7.800 inhabitants. As testimony of the medieval origins of these places are still standing the ancient castle of Cozzile and the churches of San Jacopo Maggiore and Santa Maria Assunta. The first dates back to the thirteenth century and presents a simple facade with stone beside the bell tower, inside is preserved a wooden organ of '700, a font in marble of the sixteenth century and the eighteenth-century baptismal font. The second is known since the 787 and still shows signs of the ancient romanesque implant in the bell tower. The building was renovated in '500 equipping it with the portico on the facade and the cupola over the presbytery. The majority of the population is established in the most recent location of Margine Coperta, Bruceto, Traversagna and Biscolla but is from the oldest villages that can be enjoy a magnificent view of the cultivated hills and on Mount Serra.|"Massa e Cozzile"
