Gavorrano is located on the northern slopes of Mount d'Alma, its territory extends from the plain of the Maremma Grossetana and the south-eastern extremity of the Colline Metallifere. The area has numerous mines with deposits of pyrite exploited until the early 80s. The quarries and equipment once used for the excavation are still visible and are part of a vast museum complex: the Mineral and Natural Park of Gavorrano. On the territory were found some necropolis of the etruscan period, at the time Gavorrano had to be dependent on the largest cities of Vetulonia. In the Middle Ages it was skillfully managed by the family of the accounts Pannocchieschi d'Elci. After many struggles between Siena and Massa to take possession of the area, the town succumbed to Siena and followed the same ruin of the city in 1555 when it was incorporated in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The depopulation of the town was arrested after the unification of Italy thanks to the discovery of mineral deposits that made Gavorrano one of the main pyrite mines in Europe. Although mining has now ceased, the town has managed to survive thanks to the many places of historical, cultural and artistic interest that offers. Gavorrano preserve indeeed many of the ancient structures dating back to the Middle Ages: walls, doors, arches, the castle and also the medieval villages of Caldana, Ravi and Giuncarico. Admirable are the ruins of Castel di Pietra from which tower, according to legend, was pushed Pia de' Tolomei, figure od the Dante's Purgatory. To try are the many nature trails crossing this picturesque landscape to discover the historical and artistic wonders, including churches, palaces and villas, built in ancient times in the area and come to the present day.|GavorranoApartment a Gavorrano Camping a Gavorrano Winery a Gavorrano
