Peccioli is located about 144 m on top of a hill from which enjoys a picturesque view of the Valley of Era. It is located along the road that leads from Volterra to Pisa. The history of the city is known from the middle of the twelfth century, although some documents attested its existence even previously. In 1193 it was ceded to Pisa by Emperor Henry VI thus starting the contest with Volterra. Florence came to the aid of Pisa and managed to return to the ally city the towns of Peccioli and Montecuccoli. In 1406 the town passed definitively under the control of the Florentines. Peccioli's profile is recognizable thanks to the Parish of San Verano, building dated between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. In the center is also the Praetorian Palace built in the Middle Ages and remodeled between 1700 and 1800. Today, it houses the Museum of Russian Icons named after Francesco Bigazzi journalist and correspondent from Moscow, who donated the icons collected by him to the city. The museum center of Peccioli does not end here, the city can boast of the Archaeological Museum, the Collection-Museum of Etchings and Lithographs, the Bell Tower and the Museum of Sacred Art. Many events enliven the life of the town trough the all year, in particular is very active the theater company Peccioli Teatro that produces works of italian and foreign authors in the theatrical exhibition 11 Lune which takes place in July. Today Peccioli is a place with a strong vocations for agriculture and tourism. The countryside is planted with vines and olive trees managed from several agricultural farms.
