The town stands on a hill about 600 m above sea level between Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia. In the landscape the natural environment and the work of man manage to harmonize with each other offering a unique spectacle. Rural urbanism and town centers rich in history, art and culture co-exist in a highly specialized agricultural landscape of vineyards and olive trees. Of Etruscan origin, although it is thought that the Etruscans and Romans have left this earth untouch. Always been the subject of interest from Florence and Siena, Montepulciano has often had to defend itself from attacks and resist behind his three circles of walls, dating back to the fourteenth century. In 1390 Montepulciano allied with Florence steadily until the early 1500s, during this period enjoyed political stability, cultural and artistic prestige. The subsequent control by Siena lasted only until its fall in 1555. After that, the country was among the possessions of the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. Later with the reclamation of the territory and the reorganization of the road system were facilitated both agricolture and trade. To prevail was the agricultural sector because of its position far away from the railroad. Outside the walls there is the Madonna di San Biagio, imposing statue of travertine, instead entering in town the road goes up the hill, passing in front of many renaissance buildings to reach the highest point of the country in Piazza Grande. Here are the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and the gothic Duomo dating from the late sixteenth century. Montepulciano is known internationally for its quality production of Vino Nobile DOCG derived from the cultivation of vineyards. Around the country there are also forests of pines, oaks and chestnut trees and flat areas of former marshland.|MontepulcianoBed and Breakfast a Montepulciano
