The town lies in the heart of the Crete Senesi and is crossed by the river Asso from which it takes its name. On the territory of San Giovanni d'Asso were found remains of etruscan and roman times, although its construction is attested between the twelfth and the fourteenth centuries. At the beginning of the twelfth century was feud of Count Paltonieri da Forteguerra while in 1551 was ceded to the town of Siena. Since then, will be dominated by several noble families of Siena. Later, the town becomes part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany administered first by the Medici and then by the Lorena. The Parish Church of St. Giovanni Battista is the main place of worship in the city, seat of parish since 1492 it has a simple facade with a small rose window and a bezel blank surmounting the door. On the opposite side to the church stands the castle built in stages between the 1100 and the first half of the fifteenth century. Most important room of the fortress is the Fireplace Room which leads also to the inner courtyard. The Church of San Pietro in Villore, already mentioned between 714 and 715, also worth a visit to appreciate the particular façade on which stand out the rose window and the door set into stone. The economic life of the territory has always been linked to agriculture because San Giovanni is located at the edge of the main roads. Are grown classic tuscan products (olives, grapes, cereals) and in recent years also mulberry trees which consequently led to the breeding of silkworms. The lack of industrialization has led to a gradual depopulation of the country that now counts about 900 inhabitants. In the countryside surrounding San Giovanni d'Asso is a precious tuber: the truffle. To celebrate this product of the earth is held annually the Mostra Mercato del Tartufo Marzuolo delle Crete Senesi with tastings and walks in search of the tuber accompanied by experts.
